TRAINING ON APPROACHES TO PARTICIPATORY ASSESSMENT AND MONITORING OF RANGELANDS
A four day training on approaches to participatory assessment and monitoring of rangelands has just concluded at ISTVS. The training which brought together tutors from the department of dryland agriculture and natural resources Management and veterinary was facilitated by Dr. Jason Sircely of ILRI-Ethiopia. The goals of the trainings were to:
- Learn a variety of approaches to rangeland assessment and monitoring
- Understand the overlaps and differences between western science methods and pastoralist local knowledge
- Develop a draft participatory assessment and monitoring plan for a specific area of Somaliland
During this event, local pastoralists were interviewed in a joint participatory session on their experience and challenges in pasture management. It was observed during the discussion that, drought, overgrazing, gully erosion and invasive plant species have tremendously affected pasture production in the region.
On the last day, participants had a chance to roll their sleeves in a practical session on pasture monitoring using the LandPKS / Monitoring Rangeland Health model (Riginos and Herrick 2010; Riginos et al. 2011). The exercise which took place in Wabaa village of Sheikh district focused on the comparison of pasture in degraded land (hill top) and open grazing land. Data collection was made on plant and ground cover, gaps of more than one meter between plant bases and plant density. Later in the day, the data was compiled and inferences drawn from it.
