A cross – sectional survey was conducted from May to June 2018. The aim of study was to assess the knowledge, attitude and practices (KAPS) of contagious caprinepleuropneumonia (CCPP) among pastoralist in Galkaio district of Somalia. During the study a total of 100 pastoralists were interviewed using questionnaire to assess the level of knowledge, attitude, and practices of CCPP among pastoralist in Galkaio district. There were some traditional knowledge about the disease, the disease symptoms and the transmission. The source of ethno veterinary knowledge of pastoralists was their fellow pastoralists. Pastoralists used burning the coastal area of infected animals with a hot iron and insertion of a piece of lung tissue below the skin of infected animals as strategy for treatment and control of CCPP. Many pastoralists had bad attitude against livestock vaccinations. They believe that vaccinations cause disease in livestock. It was recommended that more study is carried out and ethnoveterinary knowledge of diseases is documented. Pastoralists should be trained about the importance of vaccinations for their livestock. |

Toxoplasmosis is a zoonotic parasitic infection caused by Toxoplasm gondii. It is estimated to infect one third of the world’s population although the majority of the infections are largely asymptomatic. There are reported cases of toxoplasmosis in all the regions of Somaliland and it is one of the tests recommended for pregnant women in Somaliland.
The purpose of this study was to identify the prevalence of toxoplasmosis among the reported hospital patients and to assess the level of knowledge of the disease among butchers in Sheikh town. Hospital records for the last two and half years were reviewed. Additionally, questionnaires were administered to butchers in Sheikh town to assess level of knowledge of toxoplasmosis. Information collected included the demographic characteristics of the study population, the knowledge and practices of the disease amongst butchers. Humatax or rapid tests were the only tests used in the hospitals. The disease was more prevalent in females for all the two and half years compared to males. The hygiene of butchers and Sheikh Slaughterhouse was poor. Communities should be trained well about the hygiene and prevention of toxoplasmosis. |

Cross-sectional study on the assessment of health and welfare of working donkey in Hargiesa city were carried out from May to June 2018. The aim of this study was to establish donkey welfare problems by using physical, feeding and behavioral parameters of working donkeys in Hargiesa city. Two hundred and three (203) working donkeys and their owners participated in this study. The study found that working donkeys are suffering from multiple welfare problems including shortage of feeds, long working hours, improper harnessing, overloading and presence of wounds. Although the veterinary services are getting better they still need improvement. This study recommends training on for donkey owners on all aspects of animal welfare so as to change their attitude towards working donkeys. |
