The DEAM dream
14th September 2018 marked a major milestone for the IGAD Sheikh Technical Veterinary School (ISTVS) and University of Nairobi as they graduated their first batch of Degree students to be trained in Somalia during the 59th University of Nairobi graduation ceremony.
Sixteen well-deserving graduants were awarded their Bachelor of Science Degree in Dryland Economics and Agro-Ecosystem Management (DEAM), the first group to successfully complete the University of Nairobi accredited and mentored programme. Out of the 16, 4 were awarded First Class Honours, 6 Second Class Honours (Upper Division) and 6 Second Class Honours (Lower Division).
The course entails two years of studies in dryland agriculture-related basic science and the fundamentals of the professional agricultural disciplines, followed by two years where one specializes in one of the following majors: Dryland Economics, Agricultural Extension, or Land and Water Resource Management in Drylands. Courses are taught by ISTVS qualified and experienced staff, implemented through lectures, practical sessions (both laboratory and field-based), tutorials, field attachments, study trips and examinations.
After four years of hard work, DEAM graduates are now eligible to enter the job market following prosperous careers. They can take up positions such as Agricultural Officer or Extension Officer with the Ministry of Agriculture; Data Collection Consultant for both Government and NGOs; Natural Management Officer with NGO and Ministries of Agriculture and Environment. They can enter into self-employment in agri-business, or pursue further studies, gaining Master degrees or a PhD.
