Terra Nouva-ILRI LIVE programme training:
End of ISTVS Capacity Building Workshop in designing Ms-Access databases and Data management in Stata – Day Five, 16th February 2017
Today marked the end of a five day ISTVS Capacity Building Workshop that kick started on Sunday, 12th Feb 2017 whose main objectives were to train ISTVS staff in designing Ms-Access databases and Data management in Stata that have been fully achieved and appreciated by the participants.
The day began with a presentation on “Knowledge of Livestock Grading and Market Participation among Small Ruminant Producers in Northern Somalia”, a research project that was actively conducted by Wanyoike F., N. Mtimet, N. Ndiwa from ILRI, L. Godiah from Terra Nouva, and A. Warsame, Karen Marshall from ISTVS. Livestock being the backbone of Somaliland economy, this survey team found out that it actually employs around 65% of the population, contributing to about 40% of the country’s GDP and 80% of the foreign export earnings.
While the grading system presents an opportunity for animal producers to make higher profits not much is known about their knowledge and utilisation of the system as they were not included in these studies. This study sought to fill this dearth of information by focusing on market participation and awareness about the grading and pricing system among the sheep and goats producers. The study was motivated by the realization that producers cannot make deliberate efforts to exploit the grading system to realize higher incomes if they are not aware about it.
Thereafter was a recap of all the previous activities which included designing tables, forms, queries and reports and relationships in Ms-Access datasets; getting data into STATA, saving or exporting data, generating and replacing of variables, sorting, reshaping, by processing, bulk processing, missing values, variable types, merging, appending and joining data and finally creating summarized data sets. Participants expressed a sigh of gratitude and appreciation of the facilitators and partners of this training and requested for an extension of time for the future trainings of a similar kind claiming this was very short. Then ISTVS Principal, Dr. Fred Wesonga officially closed the workshop where he thanked ILRI and Terra Nouva for organizing such a wonderful training for the staff that were also applauded for their active participation and requested them to pass on the acquired skills in these packages to students especially in final classes. This kind of training will help even the government officials from the ministry of livestock to enhance livestock production, marketing and the grading system in Somaliland.
